Reducing air travel and compensating of emissions - Veikkaus Oy
Reducing air travel and compensating of emissions - Veikkaus Oy, WWF's Green Office example 2013
Veikkaus started to compensate for work-related air travel emissions at the beginning of 2013. This action was taken as part of our endeavour to reduce the environmental effects of work-related travel, working towards our environmental objectives.
We have, first of all, endeavoured to reduce air travel during the past few years whenever rational from the point of view of our business operations. It is evident that we cannot quit air travel altogether. However, we have been able to replace some of the flights either by choosing other forms of travel or by, e.g., organizing e-conferences. Our recent organizational changes have also reduced the need for air travel. From 2011 to 2012 international air travel was reduced by one percent and domestic air travel by twenty percent. In fact, the number of air miles incurred during the first six months of 2013 was fifty percent lower than that of the entire year 2011.
We receive a report from our travel agency on our air travel emissions every six months. On the basis of the report, we compensate for the emissions through the Finnish offsetting company Nordic Offset. Our compensation payments are used to support the Gold Standard certified wind power project in Zangbei, China, which has been approved by WWF. This project produces renewable energy with zero emissions and supports the local infrastructure in a sustainable way.
We charge the compensating payments to the different units according to the number of flights each unit has made. By doing so, we can make sure that the costs of compensation are carried by the units that have generated the emissions.
