Recycling in Riga - PDF, Latvia
Overcoming the challenges with waste sorting - Pasaules Dabas Fonds, Latvia, Green Office example, 2013
Pasaules Dabas Fonds (PDF) has obtained WWF Green Office certificate on September, 2013.
One of the targets we set was to decrease the amount of unsorted waste. During the one year implementation of the Environmental Management Program we managed to introduce almost all waste sorting possibilities for employees.
The main objective was to make waste sorting a habit. To do so sorting of each group of waste was started slowly, giving employees one to three month to become accustomed with the new system. During this time several communication activities were carried out to increase knowledge & motivation.
Sorting of waste in Riga is challenging not only because it involves the change of habits in the country that lacks waste sorting culture as such but – even more importantly – because of the weak, inconvenient sorting infrastructure in the city.
Plastic, paper & glass sorting is doable, as well as electronic and toxic waste. But sorting of organic waste – at least from our experience – is either extremely expensive or extremely inconvenient.
Even though we try to recycle organic waste on our own, it is not yet convenient, easy and cost-effective way to do it.
City of Riga should offer waste sorting infrastructure to improve recycling facilities and possibilities, but Pasaules Dabas Fonds shows great example of do-it-yourself spirit!
